The Romans beat off these attacks, but from now on they were continually at war with their neighbors – Latin, Sabine, Volscian and Etruscan. Tarquin and his Etruscan allies organized a co-ordinated attack on them, and hill-tribes such as the Sabines and Volsci raided their territory. With the expulsion of the last king, Tarquin the Proud, the Romans immediately found themselves fighting for their lives. The Romans’ triumph over both these challenges laid the foundations for future greatness. The early history of the Roman Republic was one of fierce external pressure accompanied by sharp internal tensions. Around 500 BCE the Etruscan kings were expelled and in their place the Patricians, the heads of the leading clans in Rome, chose consuls from amongst their own numbers. In Rome’s case the move towards the expulsion of the kings was also probably something of an independence movement. These Kings, the Tarquinii (who, according to legend, were descended from the kings of Corinth in Greece) embellished the city with walls, a central forum (public square), an efficient drainage system, a wooden bridge across the Tiber, and temples – all the accoutrements, in fact, of a city-state of the ancient Mediterranean.īy the time of the later Tarquin kings, another Greek innovation was spreading through Italy – republicanism. Etruscan lords came down and took control of the city, probably shortly after 600 BCE, and gave the city a line of kings. Sometime in the centuries after 700 BCE these farmers merged their villages together to form a city-state and very soon their location at a strategic crossing point on the river Tiber, twelve miles or so from its mouth, attracted the attention of their powerful Etruscan neighbors to the north. The Romans were not in fact typical of the usual Latin communities, in that from an early date they seem to have been a mix of Latins and Sabines, a more pastoral people who lived in the hills east of Latium. They originally inhabited a cluster of villages on a group of hills in northern Latium, at a well-trodden crossing pint of the river Tiber. ![]() One such community affected by these changes was that of the Romans. Many of them came under the political domination of Etruscan lords. ![]() The Latins could not but help feel the influences radiating from north and south, and slowly they merged their farming villages into urban settlements. They had close commercial contacts with Greeks, Carthaginians and other civilized peoples of the region. They too lived in towns and cities rather than in small villages, and developed a sophisticated urban culture. They developed an advanced material culture which, like that of the Greeks, owed a great deal to contacts with the eastern Mediterranean and Near East. ![]() Meanwhile, to the north of the Latins another civilization arose, that of the Etruscans. Within a century or so of their coming they had also brought such innovations as the alphabet and coinage to the Italian peoples amongst whom they lived and traded. Greek colonies were established in the plain of Campania, just south of Latium, and they introduced a new way of life based on towns and trade. In the eighth century BCE their rural way of life began to be effected by influences coming in from outside. They had come down into Italy from the north, like other Italic peoples, and had settled in small villages of thatched huts, sometime in the second millennium. In central Italy there is a plain on the west coast called Latium, which takes its name from the Latin people who lived there in the first millennium BCE. ![]() This was a period of cultural change, when the simple way of life of the peoples of central Italy was beginning to be affected by new influences from the eastern Mediterranean. The rise of the Roman Empire can be traced back to Italy of the eighth century BCE. ![]() In total, over 50,000 Russian soldiers were killed and some 92,000 taken as prisoners in the Battle of Tannenberg-named thus by the Germans in vengeful remembrance of the village, where in 1410 the Poles had defeated the Teutonic Knights. In the first hours of August 30, confronting the reality of his army’s collapse, Samsonov went into the forest, away from his staff, and shot himself. After three days of battering by German artillery, Samsonov’s troops began their retreat more German forces cut off their path and a massive slaughter ensued. The delay in starting the attack had given Samsonov’s forces more time to advance deeper into the sack formed by the German divisions enveloping them from both sides, the strength of which Samsonov consistently underestimated. On August 26, after intercepting wireless messages from both Samsonov and Rennenkampf, the Germans were able to take Samsonov’s army by surprise with the force of their attack near the village of Tannenberg, to the southwest of the Masurian Lakes. Though Ludendorff succumbed to nerves initially, delaying the start of the German attack by one day, Hindenburg was able to calm his subordinate-not for the last time in what would become a fabled partnership. Separated by the great Masurian Lakes, the two Russian armies were unable to effectively communicate with each other as to their movements, a circumstance that would prove deadly. Hindenburg, a retired general of great stature, and Ludendorff, who had just led the German capture of the Belgian fortress of Liege, arrived in East Prussia and immediately authorized an aggressive counter-action against the Russians, previously planned by a senior staff officer in the region, Colonel Max Hoffmann. Meanwhile, change was afoot behind the German lines: Helmuth von Moltke, chief of the German general staff, chose to replace the previous leader, Maximilian von Prittwitz, after the latter issued a misguided order for a German retreat to the River Vistula, against the advice of his corps commanders. After a Russian victory in the Battle of Gumbinnen on August 20, however, Rennenkampf paused to regroup his forces. The Russian 1st Army, under General Pavel Rennenkampf, advanced to the northeastern corner of East Prussia, while Samsonov’s 2nd Army made headway into the southwest, planning to join with Rennenkampf’s men and pin the outnumbered German 8th Army between them. In the middle of August 1914, much sooner than had been anticipated, Russia sent two armies into East Prussia, while Germany, according to its war strategy, had the bulk of its forces concentrated to the west, against France. On August 26, 1914, the German 8th Army, under the leadership of Paul von Hindenburg and Erich Ludendorff, strikes with lethal force against the advancing Russian 2nd Army, led by General Aleksandr Samsonov, in East Prussia during the opening weeks of the First World War. It more than makes up for that by standing out gameplay-wise, however. Similarly, the graphics are pretty unremarkable while Badland looks nice enough, it also exists very much in the post-Limbo space of “artsy platformers”, and while it’s undeniably cool that that’s been successful enough to distinguish itself as a unique genre, it also means that Badland doesn’t stand out visually as it did even a few years ago. You’re just a round little monster with the ability to do some crazy things, and that’s about all the context you’re going to get. There’s zero attempt at a story or plot, for one thing. What’s impressive is that Badland shines so brightly despite the fact it’s so unremarkable in other ways. This, too, speaks to the game’s strong level design most of the time it’s easy enough to figure out what you’re supposed to do, but the challenge comes in actually doing it. The controls strike the right balance between being totally intuitive to pick up, yet incredibly difficult to pull off. Whatever its origins, though, I’m glad to play Badland in its current form. The fact it could’ve shined on a touchscreen when it seems so well suited to the Vita (or any other console with buttons) astounds me. Not only that, as the game progresses it requires more and more precision - and as great as touchscreen gaming can be in a lot of ways, precision isn’t exactly its strong suit. While the vast majority of Badland can be played with one button, there’s still a small-but-essential part of it that demands you use a thumbstick to maneuver. ![]() My disbelief comes from the actual execution. There’s a little more nuance to the gameplay when you factor in the power-ups - some make you spin, some make you multiply in number, and so on - but basically, the gist of the game is so simple, it’s hard to imagine Badland getting it’s starting anywhere but mobile. You use one button to flap your little arm-wings, and you increase or decrease your height based on the obstacles in your way. ![]() This is simultaneously incredibly easy and incredibly difficult to believe.Įasy because, at its core, the game is essentially an artsier version of Jetpack Joyride or Flappy Bird. The “Game of the Year” part of Badland’s title comes from the fact the game was named Apple’s GOTY for the iPad in 2013. ![]() ![]() This typeface is also available within Office applications.
